Cleveland? Who knew? What a great city!
We wandered around on a foot tour and gained some insight into Cleveland’s past and a glimpse of their future. The city was clean, not congested, and as a burgeoning sports/entertainment center. The new architecture complements the historical elements somewhat because they have a major push on to repurpose buildings downtown. Several of the old warehouses are now high-end lofts.
After about 90 minutes of meandering, we ended up at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was a great 6-story exhibition. Because it was largely dark inside, photos didn’t show anything interesting.
It was a short walk back to the ship which was tied up to a wharf. As we made our way back, we came upon the Cleveland Fire Fighters Memorial. It was a somber reminder of the danger they are in every day.
Back at the ship we saw why we were tied up at a wharf instead of in the “normal” slip they use. It was because the USS Nantucket (LCS 27) was in our spot. Christened on August 7, the Nantucket is the latest Freedom-variant littoral combat ship. It is undergoing sea trials and was really interesting to see all the work going on while in port.
