We entered the river on the way to Lisbon just at dawn. It was a wonderful scene and then the Christ statue came into view. It is modeled after the one in Rio di Janerio. It is striking in its command of the landscape.
Today was another easy day, or so we thought. The excursion we signed up for was called "Walking tour and Wine Tasting." I mean what could be better than going on a wine tasting trip before 10 AM? It was interesting to walk through the streets and listen to the history of Portugal in general and Lisbon specifically. I snapped some photos of the streetscape to capture the feel; Lisbon is different than a lot of other cities we've been in. About an hour into what turned out to be a 5-mile hike we stopped at a fine restaurant where we sampled a local red wine, white wine, and of course port. They had prepared small bites to enjoy with each wine and it was a nice rest.
The remainder of the time we wound our way through the old city to the Church of Saint Anthony of Lisbon. According to tradition, the church was built on the site where the saint was born, in 1195. It was a well-balanced design; large enough to feel significant while small enough to be intimate.
Back on the ship we started to enjoy a dinner under the stars. The crew cleared the pool deck and brought in tables and chairs. Live music was going on. We placed our orders. They never came. I think we were caught between two server stations and just got missed. So, to make it a great evening, we went up to the steak house and they could not have been nicer when they learned what happened. The food was great and the food and beverage manager came by to personally apologize (none was necessary).
