Today was our second and last day in Lisbon. What a wonderful city we discovered.
This was also a food day. We found out about Secret Food Tours last year. It is a company that has private tours in many cities around the world (we did one in Istanbul if you want to back up to our start of this journey). This one did not disappoint.
We started at a small shop that prepared sandes de leitão which are tiny, delicous pork sandwiches. The bread was almost as good as the tender pork. Next was a stop at a port shop where we learned a lot about port, the aging process and the different types. We had a 10 year tawny port paired with a sharp cheese. It was perfect! Next was a stop at a restaurant where we had a huge sardine on a toasted brioche, a thinly shaved meat (I forget what it really was), a taste of alheira (a poultry sausage that was developed by the Jews who were forced to become Catholic in the early 16th century) and then bacalhau (a national Portugese dish that was a potato base with salt cod). It came as a nice presentation then the server mixed it all together. It was wonderful. Then on to a palate cleansing with a peach accompanied by a cherry liqueur of some sort.
Then came dessert: Pastel de Nata. Pastel de nata is a custard tart that has a super flaky shell and a soft, luxurious cream filling. One of our party (Diane) had 4 of them within 24 hours!
