Our last day in London together...
Dennis and Diane leave tomorrow for home; we leave on Monday.
This was a "let's just see what unfolds" kinda day. The only thing on the calendar was another West End show at 2:30. More on that later.
Breakfast was at a leisurely 10AM at a Danish waffle house. There were waffles (and other stuff) for sure, but these are not the kind that come from a mix in a box. These were either smaller, more flavorful 4-inch discs (Mae and Dennis) or a huge crepe. There were as many savory toppings as sweet. Mae had some banana concoction, Dennis had a “standard American diner” offering, I had crepe with onions, peppers, feta, scallions, tomatoes and basil. (That was the closest thing I’ve had to “healthy” in the last 7 weeks!) Diane had….scrambled eggs.
From there we made our way through the Tube to Mae’s emotional home base: Abbey Road. There’s really not much to it; it’s just an intersection. But how funny it was. People were lined up to walk across the street mimicking the Beatles album cover while some stranger, using one of the participant’s phone, took pictures. That’s just how we did it.
From there, in an endeavor to use all forms of public transportation, we hopped on a double-decker bus for a trip to the Apple Market in Covent Garden. We never made it. Apparently there was some kind of demonstration that brought that section of the city to complete gridlock. We hopped off the bus and started walking toward the theater. There were so many people on the street that we jumped back on the Tube to get away from the crowds.
We arrived in time for the matinee performance of Mrs. Doubtfire. This was a musical that did not need to have been made. I love musicals but I was falling asleep in the first act. After Hamilton the night before this was a serious letdown. But we totally enjoyed being together.
Dinner was at a tiny Italian restaurant where we dined al fresco and enjoyed a nice bottle of wine. One last stop for gelato sealed this 2-week leg together.
We’ve waited 42 years for a trip with just the 4 of us and it was well worth the wait.
